The Villages Gem and Mineral Club

Meeting Date: Sep 2013

A regular business meeting of The Villages Gem and Mineral Society was held at Sea Breeze Recreation Center on September 5th, 2013. Club President, Tom Mitchell, started the meeting at 6:30 pm and welcomed everyone, especially first timers.

Officers Reports:

Tom had reference materials on the front table for everyone to make use of.

He also explained our membership in the S.E. Federation.  On the front table are copies of the S.E. Federation newsletter, The Faceter’s Guild, American Land Access Assoc., AFMS Newsletters, and listings of fossil sites in Florida.

The S.E. Federation is having their annual meeting in Jacksonville, FL on Friday 9/20, and Sat. 9/21.  The Jacksonville Gem Club will have their Gem & Mineral Show 9/20-22.

A past member of the Tomoka Faceter’s Guild has left his gem and mineral collection to Santa Fe College in Gainesville, FL.  The unveiling will be Tuesday September 24 at 1:30pm.

The last item Tom wanted to discuss is the 2014 Tucson Gem Show.  The show will run from January 27th to February 16th, 2014, in Tucson, AZ.  Tom, Judy and Dick Goodspeed plan to go for 9 days. The dates are 2/6-2/15/2014.  Starting on Feb 7 there will be speakers for the Hob Nob, an event put on by the United States Faceting Guild and on Feb 8 in the evening is the Hob Nob, a gathering of faceters from around the world who share their knowledge and enjoyment of the art with each other and with pizza.  They will also have a prettiest stone contest.  The other event, which we do not want to miss, is the Tucson Gem Societies Show at the Civic Center starting on February 13 and going through Feb 16.  This is the best of all of the shows and the one that started this gem show tradition 60 years ago.

Secretary, Rhonda West

Tom asked if everyone had received the minutes for August via email and if there were any additions or changes necessary to the minutes.  There were none, the minutes were accepted.

Treasurer, Richard Goodspeed reported:

The Treasurer’s report was approved.

Vice President, Bill Collins

Bill reported on salvaging the slab saw oil.  After triple filtering the oil we ended up with about $2.00 worth of oil.

The slab saw will be fixed sometime next week.  The motor seized because the saw blade had no diamond left on it.  Now we have a new blade, a new motor and a new arbor.

Bill also took some metal, including two dead motors, to the salvage yard and came away with $16.00 for the club.

Bill also reported that he has gone to the Tucson Gem Show since 1988.  He helps a friend, at the convention center, with his booth.

Webmaster, Judy Mitchell

Judy reported that she will be putting resources on our website.  One of the resources is Jewelry

There will be the Contemporary Jewelry Show in Atlanta, GA Nov. 1 & 2.  It is an invitational show for jewelry designers.

Tucson will have many venues for taking classes and receiving instruction.  There are a number of speakers who are free.  There are also field trips, museums, and tourist type places to see.

Old Business:

New Business:

Eisenhower Regional Recreation Center will be opening soon.  Tom said he would file an application to expand our club by meeting at Eisenhower on Tuesday nights.  He was told that we couldn’t even apply for a space until the center has been opened for 3 months.  Tom will keep checking back with them so we get an application submitted as soon as is possible.

Tom went over the $1.00 donation per person per work night.  If you come in to work, expect to set-up the machines and also help cleanup.

 Special Interest Groups

Mary Ellen reported on Special Interest Groups.  The group meets the 2nd Thursday and Mary Ellen brings tools and materials for each project.  Next Thursday will be Tree of Life Pendants.

The meeting was adjourned and we had our Chinese auction and show & tell.
