The Villages Gem and Mineral Club


Meeting Date: May 2013

A regular business meeting of The Villages Gem and Mineral Society was held at Sea Breeze Recreation Center on May 2nd, 2013. Club President, Tom Mitchell, opened the meeting at 6:30 pm.  He welcomed all 14 of us to the meeting!

He held up a Diamond Pacific catalog and announced that if anyone wants buy anything to let him know because we can order through Gene McDevitt and get a significant discount.

He told us about a woman who has started an on-line course in Geology.  It is excellent! Her name is Karen Brzys and she runs the Gitche Gumee Museum in Grand Marais, MI.  Her website is

He pointed out many periodicals, newsletters, catalogs, etc. on the front table.

Secretary, Rhonda West read the minutes from the April 2013 meeting.

The minutes were approved as read.

Treasurer, Richard Goodspeed reported:

Dick also talked about Thursday work nights.  The drill is to sign-in and pay $1.00.  The number of names and the money amount does not always match.  Please don’t forget to sign-in.

The Treasurer’s report was approved.

Vice President, Bill Collins told us about a fossil pit that is close to us.  He will try to find more information about it.

New Business:

Susan McCauley asked if the minutes could be posted to the website sooner each month.

Chris Courtwright announced that the Christmas Party for 2013 would be Thursday December 1st.  Our next Club Gem Show will be the last Thursday or Saturday of January 2014.

The Weather Channel has a new show on Tuesday nights at 9 pm called “Prospectors” which is very educational and entertaining.


David George announced that Mary Ellen would not be at the wire wrapping workshop meeting on May 9th.

There were questions about courses offered at William Holland.  The 2013 fee is $330.00 for the week, which includes room and board.  Some of the classes have a lab fee and it is customary to purchase supplies for the course from the instructor.


The meeting was adjourned and we had a demonstration of the proper procedures in using our cab machines.
We also had our Chinese auction and show & tell.
