The Villages Gem and Mineral Club

Meeting Date: May 2012

A regular business meeting of The Villages Gem and Mineral Society was held at Sea Breeze Recreation Center on May 3rd, 2012. Club President, Tom Mitchell, opened the meeting at 6:35 pm.  He and Judy had returned from Australia just two days prior to the meeting.  He welcomed everyone to the meeting.  He brought in printed info, newsletters, show flyers, sources for rough, etc. and invited everyone to look at but don’t take the resources.  If you want copies just ask Tom.  He explained fossil permits and The William Holland School of Lapidary Arts.  He also re-iterated that membership in our club is $15 per person and $5 for the second person in a household.

The minutes for the April meeting were read and approved.

Old Business:

We have donated monies for a rolling mill.  We will go to Winter Park, FL and purchase the rolling mill from FDJ thereby avoiding a hefty freight charge.

New Business:

It was proposed that our next major fundraiser would be a Gem Show and Sale put on by our club.  We can use the room we meet in at our regular meeting time and avoid having to pay rent for a space.   Our members and vendors would pay for a table, which is how the club makes money.  Sellers would keep their proceeds.  Nothing was voted on.

Dave Barrows investigated having club shirts made.  Digitizing would cost about $50, which would be a one-time fee.  Then each shirt would be anywhere from $20 to $50 depending on the shirt.  Tom threw out the suggestion that we have a logo competition.  Nothing was voted on.

Tom announced that The Tomoka Faceting Guild is having a Tenth Anniversary picnic on May 19th for

anyone interested in attending.  They will have items for sale and anyone wanting to sell something can do so.

Tom did a show and tell with some of the opal rough he brought back from Australia.

Tom adjourned the meeting for our Chinese auction and additional show & tell.
