Meeting Date: Mar 2013

A regular business meeting of The Villages Gem and Mineral Society was held at Sea Breeze Recreation Center on March 7th, 2013. Club President, Tom Mitchell, opened the meeting at 6:30 pm.  He welcomed everyone to the meeting and asked visitors to stand and introduce themselves.

Officers Reports:

President, Tom Mitchell, announced that we have three field trips coming up.  The first trip is to Ruck’s Pit on March 16th at a cost of $45 p/person.  The second trip is to Peace River on April 20th at a cost of $75 p/person, unless we can get 20 or more people, which would bring the cost down to $20 p/person.  The third trip is a 3 day trip to Graves Mountain in Georgia for the “Rock Swap and Dig” April 26, 27, and 28.  The S.E. Federation arranges this event.  Graves Mountain was a mine at one time.  The cost per person is a suggested donation to Graves Mountain of $20 p/person.

Tom referenced new copies of The Lodestar, The Faceter’s Guild Newsletter, and various other publications available on the front table to look at.  There is also a limited number of the William Holland 2013 course catalog available.

The Treasurer’s report was approved.

Secretary, Rhonda West read the minutes from the January 2013 meeting.

The minutes were approved as read.

Vice President, Bill Collins, just back from Tucson brought piles of catalogs and show directories for any club members who want them.  Bill also brought in a display case with items he acquired in Tucson.

Web Master, Judy Mitchell, reported that the CLUB ROSTER has not been updated since January because there was no meeting in February.  She told us about a publication called “The Mineralogical Record” which is published 3-4 times per year.

Old Business:

There was no old business.

New Business:

Judy suggested that we have “rock talk” be a part of our meeting.  Individuals can bring in a rock and tell the club about the rock.  Call Tom ahead of time and tell him you would like to do this.

The slab saw has no oil in it because someone mixed water with the oil.  Tom will begin, next meeting, reviewing each machine and proper use of that machine.

Ron Hoppe made a motion to only allow club members to sell product to other club members.  It was amended to allow only “invited” individuals to sell product at our club meetings.

The motion carried.

Tom announced that Gene McDevitt is coming back on March 28th to demo cutting boulder opal for us.  He will also bring rough for us to buy.

The meeting was adjourned and we had Certified Gemologist, Linda Ray, talk about jewelry and gem appraisal.

We also had our Chinese auction and show & tell.
