Meeting Date: Jan 2012

A regular business meeting of The Villages Gem and Mineral Society was held at Sea Breeze Recreation Center on January 5, 2012.  The meeting convened at 6:30 pm. our new President elect, Tom Mitchell, opened the meeting.  He welcomed everybody to our club’s first business meeting of the new fiscal year.  He reminded everyone that it is time to pay yearly dues.  The first family member is $15.00 and the second family member is $5.00.

The minutes for the December meeting were read and approved.

Treasurer, Richard Goodspeed reported:

The Treasurer’s report was approved.

President, Tom Mitchell explained the printed materials laid out on the front table such as catalogs, newsletters, announcements of Gem & Mineral shows in Florida, fossil permits, etc.

He then began a discussion about the machines the club owns and the learning opportunities that are available.  Cabbing, faceting, silversmithing, wire wrapping, precious metal clay, polymer clay were all mentioned.  ______________volunteered to make up a list of the arts that could be available on our Thursday craft nights.

Ed Mrak re-iterated that we have adopted a sign-up sheet for our Thursday work nights.  It has been successful in allowing more people to get on the machines.

Tom talked a bit about William Holland School of Lapidary Arts.  The school sent 30 catalogs for our club.

Web Master, Judy Mitchell reminded everybody that our website address is  She explained some new features of our webpage which included announcements about upcoming workshop opportunities, and classified add space.  Ed Mrak asked Judy if she could bring a laptop in to show us how to navigate the site.  She plans to do that on a Thursday work night.

Upcoming field trips to the Stetson Museum; the Peace River, for fossil hunting; and Ruck’s Pit, for agatized coral.

The Tomoka Gem and Mineral Show will be in Deland on Jan.14 & 15, 2012.  Tom will be doing a faceting demo on both days.

Special Program

Ken Wierschem did a very helpful demo for us on vibratory tumbling.

The meeting was adjourned after Ken’s presentation for our “Chinese auction” and time for show and tell.
