The Villages Gem and Mineral Club


Meeting Date: Jan 2011

Call to Order:  A regular business meeting of The Villages Gem and Mineral Club was held at Sea Breeze Recreation Center on January 6, 2011.  The meeting convened at 7:00 pm. President Joe Comer presiding.

Approval of Minutes:  Minutes of the December were not available.

Officers Reports:

Treasurer, Richard Goodspeed reported:

Balance                       $ 282.59

The club still owes Tom for two Rubbermaid equipment carts.        

Unfinished Business:

  1. Membership dues of $15 per individual or $20 per couple are due as of Jan 1st, 2011.

  2. Membership in the S.E. Federation is $1.25 p/person in our club.  We get insurance to use our equipment through the S.E. Federation.

  3. Individual Fossil Permits are required now in Florida.  If you find something, other than a shark related fossil, you have to report it.

  4. We have a workroom reserved at Sea Breeze every Thursday night from 6-9 pm.  We will collect a $1 contribution from each person who uses equipment on workshop Thursdays.


New Business:

  1. Secretary, Sue Causeman has resigned her position.  Rhonda West volunteered to be the new secretary.

  2. Joe Comer will remain president for another term.

  3. Tom Mitchell will remain vice-president for another term.

  4. Richard Goodspeed will remain treasurer for another term.

  5. Barbara Peterson will remain a member at large for another term.

  6. Ed Mrak will be a member at large for the next term.

  7. Joe is going to check out new name tags, for club members, which are magnetic.

  8. Tom talked about eventually having a show where each member could sell what they have made, and we could do demonstrations as a way to garner new interest in our Gem Club.




  1. Tom offered the possibility of a field trip to Ruck’s Pit in Okeechobee for agatized coral.

  2. William Holland starts new sessions 4/17/11.  They offer classes through Nov. 1st.  The cost is $310 p/wk, double occupancy.  The fee includes room and board.  There may be an additional lab fee depending on what class you take.

  3. Larry Vandergrift donated dops and a couple of laps for the Graves Faceting machine.

  4. Ed Mrak ordered two new belts for the Graves Faceting machine.

  5. The Tomoka Gem and Mineral Society is putting on a Gem & Mineral show in Deland Jan 15 & 16.  Tom will send out an email organizing a field trip to the show.  Stetson University also has a Gem & Mineral Museum.  The field trip would be to both venues.

  6. Tom will do a demonstration of “Refracted” tonight.

  7. Dick had info on where to buy slab material on the internet.

  8. Anyone who wants to order from Kingsley North can take advantage of the Club discount by placing the order through Dick or Tom.



Dick, a metallurgist, and Carol, a silversmith.

Lynn (friend of Dick & Carol) has been in a Gem & Mineral Club in AZ.

Bill is a collector of stones and things made of stones.


Meeting was adjourned and we had our “Chinese auction” and “show and tell” time.
