The Villages Gem and Mineral Club


Meeting Date: February 2011

A regular business meeting of The Villages Gem and Mineral Club was held at Sea Breeze Recreation Center on February 3, 2011.  The meeting convened at 7:00 pm. President Joe Comer presiding.

Minutes of the January meeting were read.

Officers Reports:

Vice President, Tom Mitchell reported on the Tomoka Gem, Mineral & Fossil Show.  Six of our members went to Deland to attend the show.

There is a show Feb. 18, 19 & 20 in Vero Beach and one in St. Petersburg March 4-6.

Treasurer, Richard Goodspeed reported:

Balance to date          $ 269.05


Unfinished Business:

  1. Membership dues of $15 per individual or $20 per couple are due as of Jan 1st, 2011.

  2. We have a workroom reserved at Sea Breeze every Thursday night from 6-9 pm.  We will collect a contribution from each person who uses equipment on workshop Thursdays.  The contribution is $1 for equipment use, except the facet machine which is a $5 contribution.


New Business:

  1. A sign-in sheet has been instituted on workshop nights.

  2. Larry has put together a notebook for learning to facet.



Brian Dixon would like to get together with others who are interested in silversmithing.  The thought is to begin incorporating smithing and jewelry making into the Thursday night workshops.


Elaine, seasonal Villager has always liked rocks.

John, from Orlando, has done some lapidary and is interested in getting back to it.  Is especially interested in emeralds.

Jane and Ken from Wisconsin have been picking up rocks since childhood.  Has done cabbing and wire wrapping.

Link has been a Villager for 5 years and is a retired science teacher.


Meeting was adjourned and we had our “Chinese auction” and “show and tell” time.
