The Villages Gem and Mineral Club

Meeting Date: Apr 2012

The regular monthly business meeting of The Villages Gem and Mineral Society was held in the Craft Room at The Sea Breeze Regional Recreation Center on April 5, 2012.  Vice President Bill Collins called the meeting to order at 6:35 PM.   Ken Wierschem was appointed Secretary Pro Tem.

Copies of the minutes were put on each table prior to the meeting.  When I placed them on tables where people were sitting I said if they read them now I wouldn’t have to read them during the meeting.  When I stood up I indicated there was a copy of the minutes on each table.  When I asked if anyone wanted me to read the minutes Christine Courtright  moved, and Linda Betz seconded, to approved the minutes as presented.  Voice vote: All ayes.  The motion carried.  Note; a number of people seconded the motion, but Linda talked to me after the meeting and gave me her name, which made the difference because I do not know most of the names, and I was too busy writing everything down!

Treasurer Richard Goodspeed gave the following report:

      Checking Acct. Beginning Balance            $1,556.47
                                                    Deposits               140.50
   (Cabing  Machine)       Disbursements               940.00
Checking  Acct. End of March Balance               656.97
                                         Cash on Hand               184.14
                            Total Funds Available               841.11

Note:  We should have had a motion, second, and a vote to “Accept the Treasurer’s Report” together with a Voice vote.  We all goofed on that one!

Christine Courtright gave a recap of the club’s participation in The Villages Outdoor Expo.  There were a number of guests at this meeting (10 out of the 28 attendees) because of their attending the Expo.  A great big TVGMS THANK YOU to Christine for organizing our participation.  Each group represented was given 2 free expo T-shirts and Christine put the names of all club members who worked on or at the expo and congratulation to Richard Goodspeed and Mary Ellen Lanigan who were the winners of the T-shirts.  From Christine: thank you to all of the club members who volunteered.

Bill Collins introduced our speaker, Don Roberts, who spoke on the topic of “COLD CONNECTIONS”.   Don has taught Jewelry making at a number of venues including William Holland School of Lapidary and Jewelry Arts.

A cold connection is joining together two elements without any heat.  There are a number of items that cannot be soldered (or welded) or withstand heat in general, like some of our gem stones.  The different types of cold connections include: Rivets, screws, nuts and bolts, wire, and glue.  There are 10 different types of rivets alone.  Like anything else in the creating realm there are some tools involved, many of which we find in any general set of tools, but in creating jewelry with cold connections, some tools are specific to this use.  Don showed many tools and jewelry projects including homemade designer beads.  Don feels we all have a certain amount of creativity within us that we need to “bring out”.

The remainder of the meeting was two groups of attendees: one around the table with Don’s cold connection creations, and the other around the table of our own silversmith, Brian Dickson, who brought some of his creations.

It was moved by Ken Wierschem, seconded by Linda Betz, to adjourn at 8:03 PM.
Voice Vote: All Ayes.  The motion carried.

Respectfully Submitted,

Ken Wierschem, Secretary Pro Tem
